Further to a successful bid to the UoB Education Enhancement Fund, work has been taking place throughout the 16-17 academic year on a project to film undergraduate and postgraduate taught students reflecting on their experiences at key transition points on their student journey. These films aim to support students who may be struggling or to help students who are planning on what to do next.
It is intended that these films will be added to the Insider’s Guide to CAL (a Canvas course (UoB’s IVLE) which is mainly used at induction), but will also be shared with interested parties who may have a use for some of the footage (e.g. Recruitment, Welfare Tutors, AWAS, Careers Network, etc) and snippets may be used to help with recruitment.
In addition to films of individual student journeys, broad film topics include preparing for university, settling in, making the jump to new ways of learning, coping with change and plans after their degrees.
Benefits to the students who participate – by encouraging them to articulate their successes and reflect on how they overcame challenges.
Provision for students who, for whatever reason, do not wish to engage directly with staff to receive advice or guidance.
Students will be more aware of what transition is and may recognise that they can play an active role in how they cope with changes.
Championing of ‘real’ student experience with highs and lows and things learned through working through things, as opposed to the pressure associated with high gloss ‘best 3 years of your life’ expectations.
